Choosing where to live in Bengaluru is one of the most consequential decisions you will make when you move to the city. It determines how much you pay in rent, how long you spend on the road every day and whether you come home energised or exhausted. Bengaluru has grown in several directions at once and each tech corridor has developed its own residential character around it. The best neighbourhoods in Bengaluru for IT professionals depend entirely on where your office sits and what kind of daily life you want outside of work.

This guide breaks down four major zones of the city with the facts you need to decide.

North Bengaluru Hubs of Hebbal and Yelahanka

North Bengaluru has become one of the most sought after residential corridors for technology professionals over the last decade. The presence of Manyata Tech Park in Hebbal, which hosts companies including Infosys, SAP and a large number of global IT firms, has driven residential development along the Bellary Road corridor.

Hebbal itself sits at the junction of Bellary Road and Outer Ring Road, making it well connected to both the airport and the rest of the city. A 1BHK flat in Hebbal typically starts at around ₹18,000 per month, while 2BHK options in gated communities range from ₹28,000 to ₹45,000. Yelahanka, which is further north and closer to the airport, offers more affordable options starting from ₹12,000 for a 1BHK, though it sits farther from the metro network currently.

The upcoming Blue Line of Namma Metro, which will connect KR Puram to Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal, is expected to significantly improve connectivity in this corridor once completed. For professionals who travel frequently for work or want proximity to the airport, North Bengaluru offers an advantage that no other zone in the city can match.

The limitation here is that road traffic on Bellary Road during peak hours can be severe and the social infrastructure, while improving, does not yet match what you find in South Bengaluru. Grocery chains, hospitals and malls are present but spread out.

East Bengaluru Localities of Whitefield and Bellandur

East Bengaluru has the highest concentration of large IT parks in the city. ITPL, RMZ Infinity and Embassy Tech Village are all located along the Outer Ring Road corridor that runs through Whitefield, Marathahalli and Bellandur. This zone absorbs a large share of Bengaluru’s technology workforce.

Whitefield was long known for its connectivity issues and poor roads, but the extension of the Purple Line of Namma Metro to Whitefield (Kadugodi), which was inaugurated in March 2023, has meaningfully changed daily commuting for residents who live near a metro station. The Purple Line now runs the full stretch from Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west, passing through MG Road, Indiranagar and Baiyappanahalli.

Rental prices in Whitefield for a 2BHK flat range from ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per month, depending on whether the apartment is in a gated community with amenities or an independent building. Popular complexes in the area include Prestige Shantiniketan and Brigade Metropolis. Marathahalli offers slightly lower rents and is particularly well placed for professionals working in Embassy Tech Village or along Outer Ring Road. A decent 1BHK in Marathahalli starts at around ₹16,000 per month.

Bellandur, which sits between Marathahalli and Sarjapur Road, has a good range of apartments and relatively easy access to multiple tech parks. The area has improved considerably in terms of road quality and commercial amenities over the past few years.

The honest limitation of East Bengaluru is that the roads running through it, particularly the stretch from Bellandur to Marathahalli, still experience significant congestion during peak hours, especially if you are commuting by cab or personal vehicle rather than metro.

South Bengaluru Zones of HSR Layout and Electronic City

South Bengaluru is the preferred zone for professionals who want a balance between proximity to tech parks and access to a lively residential neighbourhood. HSR Layout, in particular, has emerged as one of the most self-sufficient localities in the city.

HSR Layout sits adjacent to Koramangala and has easy access to the Outer Ring Road. Monthly rent for a 1BHK in HSR Layout ranges from ₹20,000 to ₹35,000, making it a mid-premium option. The area has a well developed social infrastructure, with grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, clinics and cafes within walking distance of most residential streets. Many startup employees and young professionals prefer HSR Layout specifically because it does not require a car to manage daily life.

Electronic City in South Bengaluru hosts campuses of Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and HCL, among others. It has historically been one of the more affordable tech corridors for housing. A 1BHK in Electronic City starts at around ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 in peripheral areas, while apartments closer to Phase 1 and Phase 2 are pricier. The Yellow Line of Namma Metro, inaugurated on 10 August 2025, now connects Electronic City to the metro network via a 19.15-kilometre elevated corridor running from RV Road to Bommasandra. This is a major development for the area. The Yellow Line passes through Jayanagar, BTM Layout, Silk Board and Electronic City, making the commute to Central Bengaluru meaningfully faster for residents who live near a station.

Sarjapur Road offers large gated communities at relatively lower rents and is well-suited for families. However, parts of Sarjapur Road still depend on private water tankers for supply, so this is worth checking before choosing a specific apartment.

Central Bengaluru Areas of Koramangala and Indiranagar

Central Bengaluru commands the highest rents in the city, but it also offers the densest urban experience. Koramangala and Indiranagar are the two localities most associated with Bengaluru’s startup culture, its restaurant scene and its nightlife. They are also among the most walkable neighbourhoods in the city.

A 1BHK flat in Koramangala typically starts at ₹20,000 per month and can go significantly higher for furnished options in newer buildings. Indiranagar, which sits along the Purple Line of the metro with a dedicated station, offers similar rent ranges. The metro connection makes Indiranagar one of the best-connected residential areas in Bengaluru, with easy access to MG Road, Majestic, Whitefield and Challaghatta on the same line.

BTM Layout, which borders Koramangala and HSR Layout, is a popular choice for professionals who want proximity to the centre at slightly lower rents. Monthly rent for a decent 1BHK in BTM Layout starts around ₹16,000 to ₹22,000. The Yellow Line BTM Layout station now also provides metro access from this neighbourhood.

The main trade off with Central Bengaluru is noise and density. These are busy, loud and commercial neighbourhoods. If you value quiet evenings and open space, the central zone may wear you down over time.

Choosing the Best Option for Your Lifestyle

There is no single best neighbourhood in Bengaluru for IT professionals. The right choice depends on three factors in this order: where your office is, what your rent budget looks like and what kind of neighbourhood environment you prefer for life outside work.

If your office is in North Bengaluru, live in Hebbal or Yelahanka. If you work in East Bengaluru’s tech parks, Whitefield and Marathahalli are the most practical choices and metro access now makes them significantly more livable. If South Bengaluru is your work corridor, Electronic City now has metro connectivity via the Yellow Line and HSR Layout remains one of the best all round residential options in the city. If your office is in Central Bengaluru or you work remotely and want urban amenities, Koramangala, Indiranagar and BTM Layout offer the richest daily environment at a higher price.
